[Exif data] A New Technology That Can Be A Double-Edged Sword

Images posted to sites like Twitter and Craigslist can now be used by anyone to track the location of where a specific photo was taken.  Exchangeable image file format, or "Exif," data is digitally imprinted on nearly every electronic image.  It contains a host of technical data about the picture including information about shutter speed, the date and time, and the camera's serial number.  Photos taken on GPS enable devices - like smartphones - also include a digital stamp of the coordinates where the images were taken.  The data can be used to catch criminals by prosecutors and law enforcement agents, but also can be used by criminals to target victims.  There are numerous free programs available online that can mine Exif data from photos.  Be aware that when posting images on Facebook, Twitter, etc., people can track you, they have access to where your home is.
